Ann-Marie Hall
Humanistic & Integrative Therapeutic Counsellor

A poem that guides my work

One poem I return to often is Wild Geese by Mary Oliver.

It begins with the words:

“You do not have to be good.”

For many people, that sentence alone brings relief. The poem speaks of

loosening perfectionism and self-judgement and of listening to the “soft

animal” of our own bodies — our instincts, needs and longings. It

reminds us that even when we feel lost, we still belong — part of what

Oliver calls the “family of things.”

For me, therapy can be a place where that shift begins: from harsh self-

criticism toward self-compassion, connection and a gentler way of being.

Therapeutic Counselling

I work with clients who may feel anxious, overwhelmed, stuck, or

disconnected, offering a supportive and respectful space to explore

emotions, relationships, and life experiences. Alongside talking therapy,

we may also pay attention to the body and breath, and use creative

approaches where images, symbols, or simple materials can help

express what feels difficult to say in words.

Creative work can offer another way of understanding yourself.

Sometimes parts of us shaped by earlier experiences — our feelings,

beliefs, strengths, and vulnerabilities — are easier to access through

image, metaphor, or movement than through conversation alone.

Exploring these aspects gently and at your pace can deepen self-

understanding and open space for growth and change.

You don’t need to know exactly what’s wrong, or how to explain it,

we can begin wherever you are.

About Ann-Marie

As a humanistic and integrative therapeutic counsellor based in Brighton,

I work with care and sensitivity, drawing on a range of approaches, creative methods,

and an understanding of how the mind and body respond to experience.

I believe therapy is a collaborative process built on trust, where feeling

safe allows deeper exploration to take place. Within a steady therapeutic

relationship, personal experiences can be shared, understood, and

gently explored, opening the way for healing, growth, and wellbeing.
